G.I. Joe Meets Barbie, Software Engineer Meets Caregiver: Males and Females in B.C.'s Public Schools and Beyond. BCTF Research Report.
Schaefer, Anne C.
Following a referral from the March 2000 Annual General Meeting of the British Columbia (B.C.) Teachers' Federation, the Spring 2000 Representative Assembly passed a motion that recommended research be collected, conducted, and disseminated on the current status of students in the province. This research report identifies current information on the status of male and female students B.C.--or Canada or another jurisdiction when B.C. data are not available--before and after completing or leaving the public school system. The report's primary purpose is to provide accurate and timely data to inform public dialogue about the experiences of males and females in B.C.'s public education system. Following a discussion of perceptions of the issue in other jurisdictions and certain conceptual issues, the report presents general demographics for students as well as teachers, administrative officers, and other educators. Graduation standings and dropout rate are also included. The most recent data are identified to create a picture of gender issues related to course choices and achievement. Post-secondary attendance and faculty enrollment at universities and colleges are also addressed. A section entitled "Health" includes information on sex education in the province and other health issues. The "Crime and Violence" section depicts differences in male and female criminal behavior and victimization. The final section, "Economic and Labor Indicators," provides a general comparison of male and female social and economic statuses. The report concludes with a summary and discussion of the findings. (Contains an extensive bibliography, 29 tables, and 8 figures.) (BT)
