Leadership and Administration of Successful Archival Programs. The Greenwood Library Management Collection.
Dearstyne, Bruce W., Ed.
Strong archival programs are rare, in part because the vital issues of program leadership and management have not been given sustained attention. As a consequence, many programs are under-funded, under-supported, and lack sufficient space, staff, and other resources necessary to carry out their important work. This collection of writings from eight of the field's recognized leaders provides first-hand accounts of how to go about planning, building coalitions and alliances, garnering resources, empowering and inspiring program personnel, changing program direction, and leading programs in new, dynamic directions. The essays collected in this volume provide varying perspectives, insights, advice, caveats, and other helpful information. They are based on the personal experiences of highly regarded professionals in the field who have actually developed and administered successful programs. The essays address such issues as how to define program success, the traits of a successful program, leadership traits, and similarities and differences between archival programs and similar programs, such as libraries. Contents include: "Leadership and Archival Education" (Richard J. Cox); "The Art of the Possible: The Archivist as Administrator" (Frank G. Burke); "Ways and Means: Thinking and Acting To Strengthen the Infrastructure of Archival Programs" (Larry J. Hackman); "Strategic Approaches to Program Building in Government: From Local to International and Back" (Liisa Fagerlund); "Strategic Planning and Implementation at the National Archives and Records Administration: 1992-2000" (Michael J. Kurtz); "Corporate Culture and the Archives" (Philip F. Mooney); "Archival Programs in the Academic Library" (Lauren R. Brown); "Leadership of Archival Programs" (Bruce W. Dearstyne); and "Building Strong Archival Programs: Insights and Approaches" (Bruce W. Dearstyne). (Includes an index.) (AEF)
