A survey was conducted to learn what Kentucky high school students think about the pursuit of learning opportunities after high school and how they are investing their time in anticipation of possible postsecondary attendance. The survey was sent to 3,000 16- and 17-year-olds, and nearly 1,100 responded. Nearly all were planning to go on for more schooling, and most intended to go to school in Kentucky. As a result, the survey sample represents primarily college-bound youth. The type of school students want to attend influenced their academic preparation. Those planning on a 4-year college were doing more homework, taking more demanding courses, and achieving higher grades than those planning on a community college. Students rated the instruction they had received in mathematics, science, and English relatively highly, but gave lower marks to second language instruction. Most students had access to a computer and had learned basic computer skills. The survey shows that students decided to pursue a college education quite early in their careers, with more than half deciding by middle school or earlier. Students knew little about ways to finance college. It was also apparent that some of the best academically prepared students were planning to attend college out of the state.
