These curriculum-related materials include two videotapes and a 36-page teaching guide. The first videotape, "Deborah Tannen: He Said, She Said," with a running time of 50 minutes discusses: boys and girls, status and connection, directness and indirectness, public talk and private talk, ritual opposition, and conversational style, and a conclusion which notes that gender is not the only factor influencing conversational style, and such factors as class regional background, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, profession, and personality all have a part. The Teaching Guide provides discussion topics for each section and suggestions for outside assignment. The Guide also includes two articles by Tannen: "Teacher's Classroom Strategies Should Recognize that Men and Women Use Language Differently" and "The Relativity of Linguistic Strategies: Rethinking Power and Solidarity in Gender and Dominance." The second videotape, "Deborah Tannen: In Depth," is a 25-minute companion to the first videotape. In it, Tannen addresses key issues, implications, and criticisms about the first video, including: the nature/nurture question (whether conversational styles are born or made); whether gender is the most important factor affecting conversational interaction; whether these patterns are cross-cultural; issues of power and dominance; and how linguistic and psychological approaches differ.
