A Leader's Guide to the Struggle To Be Strong: How To Foster Resilience in Teens.
Wolin, Sybil; Desetta, Al; Hefner, Keith
This guide gives adults specific and practical methods for encouraging youth to identify their strengths and to develop resilience. It links 30 teen stories written in the Youth Communication youth development program with 7 resiliencies identified by Drs. Sybil and Steven Wolin of Project Resilience. The resiliencies of insight, independence, relationships, initiative, creativity, humor, and morality can be learned by all young people. Following an introduction to the resilience-based approach, guidelines are presented on group leadership and how the session plans work. Additional chapters are organized around the seven resiliencies and materials are included on how to lead groups around these themes. Step-by-step instructions are included for conducting activities for each story. The guide can be used in the classroom or as part of social studies, language arts, or life skills curriculum. (JDM)
