Displacing Non-Guidance Tasks and Initiating Program Improvements: Data Collection Initiatives and Program Innovations.
Madden, Judy
School counselors' job descriptions leave room for many unexpected and unplanned activities. The Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland chose to address the challenge of counselors being assigned non-guidance tasks with a combination of approaches. Data collection, development of a transdisciplinary service provision model, revision of the counselor evaluation process, and building of action research skills are some of the techniques undertaken. Although the outcomes of the measures are not yet available, the approaches hold promise for boosting program accountability, enhancing awareness of contributions of the counseling programs, making suggestions for best practice, and reducing the time counselors spend on non-guidance tasks.
