Although the primary purpose of the Neighborhood Networks program in Hartford (Connecticut) is to help residents get jobs, the establishment of community computer centers can benefit senior citizens and children in addition to would-be job applicants. There are six primary types of computer centers: (1) those that introduce computers in general; (2) specialized centers for senior citizens or children; (3) business software centers; (4) centers devoted to education; (5) centers devoted to job readiness skills; and (6) centers focusing on economic development. Centers focusing on education may include remedial education materials, children's educational programs, high school equivalency, and English-as-a-Second-Language programs. Suggestions are made for starting any type of computer center, and the minimum elements for a Neighborhood Networks computer center plan are outlined. (SLD)
