Place-Based Assistance Tools: Storytelling and Community Building.
Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington, DC.
Storytelling is the most powerful activity people can engage in to build community, because storytelling is how new empowering ideas are shared. Stories structure the inner landscape from which behavior is born. This guide to storytelling in the context of community building begins with a discussion of the importance of stories, with many illustrations of their power to communicate. Primitive cultures use stories in all education because they know the lessons will stick. It is obvious that telling stories has an important place in community building. Some resources are given for those interested in learning more about storytelling, and gatherings for storytellers are listed. (SLD)
