"Second Step" is a series of curricula for preschool through junior high/middle school students that addresses the issue of interpersonal violence among adolescents. It is designed to reduce their impulsive and aggressive behavior while increasing their levels of social competence through empathy training, interpersonal problem solving, behavioral skills training, and anger management. At the middle school/junior high school level, "Second Step" has three sets of lessons, one for each year of implementation. The 15 lessons in the Level One curriculum are "foundation lessons." This curriculum contains Level Three lessons for the third year of implementation. These eight lessons essentially extend and reinforce the lessons from Levels One and Two. The lessons are divided among the following units: (1) "Understanding the Problem"; (2) "Training for Empathy"; (3) "Anger Management"; (4) "Problem Solving"; and (5) "Applying Skills." Each lesson contains discussions of concepts, objectives, preparation, teacher notes, a lesson script, role plays or activities, homework, and extended ideas. A Teacher's Guide introduces the curriculum and suggests best ways of presenting the lessons. Transparencies for lessons are included, and 31 resources are listed for further information.
