Smart Art: Learning To Classify and Critique Art.
Hollingsworth, Patricia; Hollingsworth, Stephen F.
The first step in learning to appreciate art is learning to classify a work according to its primary purpose. The artist creates art for one of three reasons: to recreate the physical world (Imitationalism); to express an idea or feeling (Emotionalism); or to create an interesting design (Formalism). A classified work may then be critiqued by: (1) describing the art elements; (2) analyzing the art principles at work; (3) interpreting the meaning; and (4) judging the work of art. The book includes instructions and suggestions for teachers; student workbook activities in classifying and critiquing art; black and white art reproductions along with explanatory material and a variety of exercises; a glossary; and an answer key.
