OECD Experts' Meeting on Libraries and Resource Centres for Tertiary Education (Paris, France, March 9-10, 1998).
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, Paris (France). Programme on Educational Building.
School libraries are changing due to developments in information technology, teaching and learning methods, and society. A meeting of 28 experts from 16 countries was convened to better understand current trends in tertiary libraries and the effect of these trends on the demand, organization, and design of libraries. Participants agreed that the library sets an image for tertiary education institutions that attract students, teachers, and researchers; that it is networked requiring professional development; that its role is to protect cultural heritage; and that it must be flexible to meet the diverse needs of today and into the future. Presenters embraced various images of future libraries that reflected new delivery mechanisms available through the use of Internet and other networked applications; some argued for flexibility in terms of building design or organizational and delivery process. Many models were also reported on or presented in which the tertiary library expands its service to multiple education institutions, lifelong learning, the corporate sector, and the community in general. This document represents the final report from the meeting covering the new ways of learning and teaching that may affect libraries; information technology and communications; library management; and library facility planning, design, and management.
