UNICEF Annual Report, 1998.
United Nations Children's Fund, New York, NY.
UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This report details the accomplishments and activities of UNICEF for the year 1997. The report begins with introductory remarks from the U.N. Secretary-General. The overview statement from the executive director notes the need to work toward a new global agenda for children in the 21st century while meeting the 2000 goals set at the World Summit for Children. The accomplishments of UNICEF in 1997 are then summarized, focusing on the development of partnerships to meet goals, fulfillment of the World Summit goals, attention devoted to process in achieving goals, broadening of scope of UNICEF activities, and building of a culture of human rights. UNICEF efforts to improve child health and education, reduce maternal mortality, end discrimination against girls and women, end child labor, and protect children from HIV/AIDS are detailed for various regions of the world. The work of UNICEF to use various media to reach children and adolescents is also described. Programs in partnership with others are detailed, including those with nongovernmental organizations in industrialized countries, other nongovernmental service organizations, private sector organizations, the World Bank, and other U.N. agencies and programs. The report outlines UNICEF's resources and management, including income, government contributions, and expenditures. Total UNICEF income is delineated by source of funding for each country or organization. The report concludes with contact information for various UNICEF committees. (KB)
