First Biennial League Report on California Community College Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tenure and Retention.
Mize, Rita M.
This document is a report on the tenure and retention of community college Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) in California. In 1995, the trustee board of the Community College League of California (CCLC) set up a committee to look at the turnover rate of chancellors, superintendents, and presidents of California community colleges over the last 20 years. Results show California community college CEOs have an annual turnover rate of 13%, which is similar to the reported national community college CEO turnover rate of 12%. Twenty percent of the California community college CEOs have tenures of 10 or more years; however, results show that California community college CEOs have shorter average tenures (4.4 years) of service compared with the national average (7.8 years). Findings also report that the CEOs usually leave their positions due to non-renewal of contract. The report further states that most California community college CEOs come from in-state, which the board suggests could be perceived as a bias or preference to in-state applicants; consequently, qualified out-of-state applicants may be discouraged from applying.
