Steinemann, Namji Kim; Fiske, Edward B.; Sackett, Victoria
This report presents an analysis of the status of teaching and learning about Asia in U.S. K-12 schools. Chapter one, "The United States and Asia: Opportunities and Challenges," addresses Asia's global profile, Asia as a market, as a partner, as a competitor, and as the invisible unknown, Asia in America, and the need for an Asia-related focus. Chapter two, "What Americans Know and Think about Asia," discusses the importance of learning about Asia and world cultures, the role of schools in conveying knowledge of Asia, concerns about how schools deal with Asia, and general knowledge about Asia. Chapter 3, "Teaching and Learning about Asia: The State of the Field," covers Asia in the curriculum, teacher preparation in Asian studies, and teaching materials on Asia. Chapter 4, "What American Students Need To Know about Asia," recommends principles to be applied to planning, designing, and implementing teaching and learning about Asia. Chapter 5, "Models of Excellent Teaching and Learning about Asia," provides examples of "best practices" in 16 schools, districts, and higher education institutions. Chapter 6, "Toward International Education" presents the recommendations of the National Commission on Asia in the Schools. Chapter 7, "Asia in the Schools: Preparing Young Americans for Today's Interconnected World," considers the changes in the world and consequences for today's young people.
