This document highlights the National Education 2001 Summit (held in Palisades, Ne York, October 9-10, 2001) in which government, business, and education leaders considered ways to raise standards and achievement in U.S. schools, offering state teaching, testing, and accountability activities, data on progress since 1966, and public supports for such efforts. Section 1, "Progress Report," explains that 49 states have set student standards, tests are more challenging than ever before, and there are positive trends in academic achievement, though achievement gaps still exist between minority and majority students. Few states have implemented complete accountability systems. Section 2, "Public Support," explains that the public wants standards to be raised and believes that students should have to pass statewide tests to graduate from high school. This conflicts with common portrayals of a growing backlash against standards, testing, and accountability. Section 3, "Teaching and Learning: Closing the Achievement Gap," discusses evidence that educational quality depends upon instructional quality, noting the need to create supportive policy environments and improve teacher quality. Section 4, "Testing and Accountability: Using Data to Drive Improvement," explains that schools need tools and information to meet higher expectations. Section 5, "Technology Demonstrations," showcases innovative educational technology programs, prototypes, and products intended to improve student achievement.
