The Beginning Reading Handbook: Strategies for Success.
Heald-Taylor, Gail
This book for early childhood educators is a practical guide for developing literacy in children between 3 and 7 years of age. Although many aspects of literacy are addressed, such as reading, speaking, listening, and writing, the predominant focus of the book is on reading. The book is not about theory, although theoretical aspects and current research are sometimes discussed, but rather contains numerous specific strategies for teachers that can be implemented with young children to make learning to read a positive experience. The book's chapters are: (1) "Building the Foundation for Literacy"; (2) "Organizing the Classroom"; (3) "Supporting Emergent and Beginning Readers"; (4) "Teaching Developing and Independent Readers"; (5) "Gathering the Books: Information Books, Theme Studies, Author Studies"; and (6) "Assessing Student Progress and Communicating with Parents." The book's appendices include a developmental reading behavior inventory, a story to be used with the developmental reading test in Chapter 1, a glossary, a topically organized bibliography of literature selections for literacy activities, and professional references.
