This report describes the Eurydice European information network on education systems. Started in 1980, Eurydice has grown to meet the needs of Europe's constantly evolving educational needs as it produces and dispenses reliable information that supports thinking and discussion about education within the European Community. Contents include discussion of Eurydice's expertise regarding informing policymaking and public debate, action on behalf of many different policymakers, observing the education systems of 11 countries, developing a special kind of knowledge whose authority is based on academic principles, making the most of its output, and cooperation with other partners. Other topics include how Eurydice as a European unit adjusted to the needs of close cooperation with national units, how it started as a documentary information network, its move toward using indicators and comparative analysis, and how it extended its activity to pre-accession countries. Its various dimensions, roles, and responsibilities are illustrated, along with ideas and plans for the future. The report concludes with two appendices (annexes) containing national unit views of the Eurydice Network and a list of Eurydice publications. (Contains 30 references.) (RT)
