This paper examines the assimilation of immigrant families in the United States. Chapter 1, "Introduction," reviews basic issues. Chapter 2, "Why Discuss the Integration of Immigrant Families?" examines such issues as continuing mismatches between immigration and immigrant policies, population dispersal, the shifting political climate, and policy targets. Chapter 3, "How Is the Immigrant Family Changing?" discusses such issues as high immigration rates, dispersal, the rapid rise in Mexican migration, and predominance of mixed status families. Chapter 4, "How Well Are Immigrant Families Faring?" discuses such issues as change across generations, child language acquisition, household income growth, increased naturalization; and rising uninsurance rates. Chapter 5, "Integration Policy: Selected Conceptual and Design Issues," examines such topics as setting expectations for immigrant family integration, determining the reach of antidiscrimination principles, limiting immigrant families' support obligations, and identifying strategies for leveraging the private sector. Chapter 6, "What Does the Federal Government Spend on Immigrant Family Integration?" discusses federal spending on targeted programs, impact assistance, targeted services, and spending on immigrant families in mainstream federal programs. Chapter 7, "Selected Directions for the Future," examines the safety net, education, employment, housing and community development, and creation of institutions focused on immigrant integration.
