A Seat at the Table: Toward a National Agenda for Asian Pacific American Children. Proceedings from "Children in Need: Asian American and Pacific Islander Children" at the Children's Defense Fund National Conference (New York, NY, March 25-28, 2000).
Coalition for Asian American Children and Families, New York, NY.
These proceedings from a conference on the health needs of Asian and Pacific American (APA) children include discussions and recommendations from each breakout session. The breakout sessions focused on trends and services; K-12 education; health and mental health; child abuse and neglect services; bias crime and violence; and poverty and welfare reform. Several common themes were raised repeatedly, and various priorities were examined, including: organize youth and parents to speak out for system reform and to participate actively in program planning; hold systems accountable to becoming more responsive to APA community needs; strengthen APA's advocacy ability with better data collection, evaluation, and needs assessments on APAs; develop linkages, networks, and collaborations inside and outside the APA community that maximize resources and expertise; promote cross-cultural understanding and realities of living in a multicultural society; and strive to bring more APAs into education, policy, and health and human services professions.
