This research used data from the British National Child Development Study to assess the effects of higher education on a number of noneconomic adult outcomes in the United Kingdom, with controls in place to take into account earlier family circumstances and earlier educational attainment. Outcomes were mainly assessed at age 33, and control variables spanned the period from 33 back to birth. The data suggest that graduates are much more likely to attain professional or managerial jobs than nongraduates. Mature graduates and noncompleters (people who entered higher education but did not get a degree) also show an advantage over A-level and below A-level qualifiers. Graduates are relatively protected from unemployment, but this is not the case for noncompleters. Graduates reported more skill improvement over the last 10 years than people with lower qualifications, and graduates are relatively more likely to perceive themselves as in "excellent" physical health. Graduates are less likely to show depression than people with A-level qualifications and somewhat less vulnerable to assault. Graduates report fewer educational problems among their children. They are also more likely to have egalitarian attitudes to gender equality, and are more likely to be nonracist than nongraduates with A-levels.
