The Asian and Pacific Islander Population in the United States: Population Characteristics, March 1999. Current Population Reports.
Humes, Karen; McKinnon, Jesse
This report presents data on demographic, social, and economic characteristics of Asian and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The U.S. Census Bureau collected this information in the March 1999 supplement to the Current Population Survey. Topics include: geographic distribution (most Asians and Pacific Islanders live in the West in metropolitan areas); age distribution (this population is young); marital status (young adult Asians and Pacific Islanders are more likely to have never married than are non-Hispanic Whites); family type and family size (most families are maintained by married couples, and families tend to be larger than non-Hispanic white families); educational attainment (among people over age 24 years, this group is more likely than non-Hispanic Whites to have earned a college degree and to have less than a ninth grade education); labor force participation, unemployment, and occupation (men are more likely than women to participate in the labor force, and Asian and Pacific Islanders are concentrated in managerial and professional specialty occupations); family income (while one-third have incomes of $75,000 or more, one-fifth have incomes of less than $25,000); and poverty status (Asians and Pacific Islanders are more likely to be poor than are non-Hispanic Whites).
