This regional dossier aims to provide concise, descriptive information and basic educational statistics about minority language education in a specific country of the European Union--Finland. Details are provided about the features of the educational system, recent educational policies, divisions of responsibilities, main actors, legal arrangements, support structures, and qualitative information on a number of schools, teachers, pupils, and financial investments. A very large minority of Finns are Swedish-speaking, and the number of bilingual families is increasing. The Swedish-speaking population of Finland can be traced back to medieval times when Swedish farmers colonized parts of Finland, and Finland was part of Sweden for more than 600 years (until 1809).
