This book is a discussion of teaching as learning--rooted in the author's personal history as a teacher and learner, and offered as one story among many to help other teachers ask questions about their own practice. The book is not intended to be a manual or a step-by-step guide for use in the classroom. Instead, it emphasizes the triumphs that come occasionally after long hours and days of hard work and tentative optimism. A central theme in the book is the author's increasing awareness of the importance of language as a tool in building community and thoughtful learning. Each chapter in the book contains classroom vignettes and personal reflections; a series of questions, intended as topics for journal writing or discussion, follows at the end of each section.
