Road to the Code: A Phonological Awareness Program for Young Children.
Blachman, Benita A.; Ball, Eileen Wynne; Black, Rochella; Tangel, Darlene M.
In order to help kindergartners and first graders who need extra work on their literacy skills, this book offers a plan for teaching phonemic awareness and letter sound correspondence. The plan in the book is a developmentally sequenced, 11-week program to give students repeated opportunities to practice and enhance their beginning reading and spelling abilities. Each of the 44 15-20 minute lessons features three activities: "say-it-and-move-it,""letter name and sound instruction," and "phonological awareness practice." The book includes detailed scripted instructions and reproducible materials, and teachers have the flexibility to shorten or extend the amount of time it takes for a student to complete the program. The book begins with a preface and acknowledgments, an introduction, the 44 lessons, instructional materials, and frequently asked questions. Contains 54 references. (RS)
