Learning without Walls: A State of Learning. Fusion 2000 Global Learning Summit (Glasgow, Scotland, September 29, 2000).
Buckby, Malcolm
Information and communication technology (ICT) is an integral part of the South Australian Department of Education and Children's Services strategy to improve education and training. A major focus involves online delivery and distance education through the Internet and teacher inservice and professional development. This redresses such problems in education delivery as staffing in rural areas, curriculum choice, isolation, and small numbers of students at various sites. One of the most direct and effective ways to deal with distance is the Open Access College. Sites making innovative uses of ICT include Coober Pedy Area School, Willunga High School, and Nuriootpa High School. Government policies and directions include the development of a school Internet infrastructure and telecommunications initiative and establishment of the Australian Science and Mathematics School. To support ICT strategies, the DECStech Learning Technologies Project has established six Global Discovery Schools. South Australia is managing a major national online curriculum initiative, including Southern Australian TAFE (Technical and Further Education) Online and the University of South Australia's in-house universal online learning environment. Mawson Lakes, a brand new estate, is being created as a learning community from the ground up. Its two unique characteristics are connection of every home, workplace, and institution with wide-band optic fiber cabling and educational services provided within the context of lifelong learning.
