Running the Virtual High School.
Droste, Bruce
The Virtual High School (VHS) is a cooperative of over 125 high schools, funded by a Technology Innovation Challenge Grant. Teachers in the cooperative, with the help of teacher mentors, instructional technology experts, university faculty, and businesses, design and offer innovative courses over the Internet. This paper discusses VHS course design, course content, costs and sustainability, and evaluation. Testimonies of VHS participants are then summarized, grouped into the following broad categories that describe the benefits of VHS and the Technology Innovation Challenge Grant program as a whole: (1) VHS expands horizons and builds communities of learners; (2) VHS is enabling teachers and students to become confident technology users; (3) VHS offers unparalleled professional development opportunities for teachers; and (4) VHS greatly increases access to courses and educational resources.
