Managing Conversations with Hostile Adults: Strategies for Teachers.
Kosmoski, Georgia J.; Pollack, Dennis R.
This book is designed to help teachers deal with hostile adults, drawing from the experiences of over 250 practicing teachers. The book begins with data from a 2-year study that includes surveys and in-depth interviews with practicing teachers and certified school support professionals from diverse schools. Each chapter contains 10 sections: the story; how taxing such encounters are; the psychological perspective of the situation; a practitioner's view; a clinical view; additional suggestions; other cases in which the learned techniques apply; summary; suggested readings; and references. The chapters are: (1) "Dealing with the Angry Screamer"; "Dealing with Public Humiliation"; "Handling Parents with Blinders"; "Neutralizing a Person Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol";"Refusing to be Coerced"; "Confronting a Colleague Who Steals Your Work"; "Surviving a False Sexual Accusation"; "Curbing the School Gossip"; "Reversing a Nonsupportive Action"; and "What Works: The 15 Most Often Used Strategies for Difficult, Frustrating, and Hostile Conversations." The teachers' code of ethics is appended. (Chapters contain references.) (SM)
