Succeeding in an Academic Career: A Guide for Faculty of Color. The Greenwood Educators' Reference Collection.
Garcia, Mildred, Ed.
Written for faculty of color in order, to address challenges specific to that population, this document discusses the challenges associated with pursuing higher education as a profession. It offers advice about building a career within the academy. Contributors to this volume explore how they have brought new scholarship into the academy, offered alternatives in pursuing their disciplines, and challenged the status quo. The issue of how to transform academia into an equitable environment is highlighted. Data suggest that progress has been made in employment of faculty of color; however it is argued that progress has been slow and that faculty of color have different experiences in their careers than do white faculty. Contributors focus on academic successes of faculty of color in an effort to offer others the benefit of their experiences. The socialization process, key to the integration and familiarization of faculty of color within higher education, is emphasized. (HB)
