For Parents Only: Tips for Surviving the Journey from Homeroom to Dorm Room.
Johnston, Julia; Shanley, Mary Kay
The transition from high school to college is complex, and this book addresses many of the transitional issues faced by parents of college bound students during that period. The purpose of the book is to provide tips on helping kids make good choices about academics, teacher, friends, and activities in high school; conducting a college search that makes sense in terms of student aptitudes and interests; using the Internet as an important tool in the college search; and coping with testing fees and paperwork. Starting with the last stages of high school and progressing through the beginning of the college search process, the authors recommend strategies for communicating with students and shaping the decision-making process. Paying for college, developing computer skills, and standardized testing are highlighted, as are campus visits, feeling out college application forms, and dealing with the challenges of learning disabilities. Chapters address "senioritis" and leaving home. Appendices include worksheets on choosing a college; resources for parents; and a listing of roundtable participants. (HB)
