This book sets out to adapt and use some of the practical approaches of genre theory to the teaching of writing to English as a Second or Other Language (ESOL) and Basic Skills students in Britain. The book has 9 units exploring different types of text or genres, descriptions of people, descriptions of places, personal narratives, folk stories, formal letters, applications for jobs and courses (personal statements), reports, discussion essays and comparative essays. A brief account of genre theory and the debate and controversy that surrounds it is given in the appendix . Each unit follows a similar format: the units are divided into two parallel sections, one at the foundation, the other at the intermediate level with two model texts at each level. Each section then contains the following: a short set of reading exercises, one page of text analysis, two pages of language exercises, one page of writing exercises, and one writing frame. Four sections include mind maps, and letter layout templates are also provided. For each genre of writing, the following stages are recommended: (1) oral modeling, presentation, and practice; (2) reading text; (3) analysis of text; (4) language exercises; (5) collaborative writing and reconstruction of text; (6) independent writing. Numerous diagrams, pictures, tables, charts, worksheets, check lists, and other material suitable for reproduction and use in the classroom are provided throughout the text.
