You Know Your Child Is Gifted When...A Beginner's Guide to Life on the Bright Side.
Galbraith, Judy
This book uses humorous cartoons and commentary on giftedness to provide parents with information on the characteristics, challenges, and joys of parenting a gifted child. Characteristics of gifted children that are highlighted include advanced intellectual ability, verbal proficiency, curiosity, creativity, high energy, focus, passion, and intensity, logical thinking, sensitivity, and sense of humor. The good things and not-so-good things about each characteristic are shared, along with ways to help encourage the development of gifted children. Information is also provided on the differences between bright children and gifted children, gifted identification, labeling, multiple intelligences, perfectionism, peer relationships, teasing, self-esteem, and child advocacy. Tips for talking to teachers are provided, along with a list of parental rights. Throughout the book, first-person stories from parents of children with giftedness offer reassurance and insights. A list of related organizations and Web sites is included. (CR)
