Still Not Equal: A Study of Differences in Male and Female TAFE Graduates' Earnings in Australia.
Dumbrell, Tom; De Montfort, Rowena; Finnegan, Wendy; Wright, Peter
Differences in the earnings of male and female graduates of technical and further education (TAFE) programs in Australia were examined in a study that focused primarily on graduates working full-time. Data were collected from the 1997 Graduate Destination Survey and from a series of focus groups and interviews with women TAFE graduates working in nontraditional occupations. The following were among the study's major findings: (1) female TAFE graduates working full time earned approximately 84% of what their male counterparts earned; (2) female graduates experienced higher unemployment rates and were less likely to attain full-time employment; and (3) the income disparity could not be explained by differences in qualifications earned by the graduates. (Forty-six tables/figures are included. The following items are included in the document's seven appendixes, which are also provided on disk: occupational analysis containing 28 tables/figures; table detailing average weekly earnings from 1997; technical note on differences in full-time hours worked; table of 1996 census data detailing full-time employed individuals in Australia by level of attainment and sex; table detailing level of qualification by field of study by sex and industry of employment; and focus group discussion guide used in stage 2 of the Graduate Earnings Project.)
