This report provides a statistical portrait of teen participation in 10 of the most prevalent risk behaviors. It focuses on the overall participation in each behavior and in multiple risk taking. The booklet presents the overall incidence and patterns of teen involvement in the following risk behaviors: (1) regular alcohol use; (2) regular tobacco use; (3) other illegal drug use; (4) weapon carrying; (5) suicide attempts; (6) regular binge drinking; (7) marijuana use; (8) fighting; (9) suicidal thoughts; and (10) risky sexual activity. The complex picture that emerges shows that teens' overall involvement in risk taking has declined (except among Hispanic youth) during the past decade. Multiple risk teens, however, remain an important group responsible for most adolescent risk taking. The report covers three aspects of risk behaviors among teens: changes in risk taking over the past decade; incidence and patterns of multiple risk taking; and involvement of risk takers in positive activities. Data are based on three national surveys: the Youth Risk Behavior Surveys, the National Survey of Adolescent Males, and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health.
