Boys Town Treatment Foster Family Services Information Series, 1-4.
Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, Boys Town, NE.
Keeping children safe in foster care is a critical concern for foster parents and the professionals working with them. This document is comprised of a set of four pamphlets, addressed to foster families and those working with foster families, providing information on medication safety, making foster care placements successful, working with social service and legal professionals, and assessing child safety in foster homes. The first pamphlet, "Medication Safety in Your Foster Home," is presented in a question-answer format and deals with safely storing and administering prescription and nonprescription medication. The second pamphlet, "Making Your Foster Care Placement Successful," presents tips for matching children and foster care families, preparing the child and the foster family for placement, identifying adequate post-placement support and services, preventing or reducing family strain, and using all available resources. The third pamphlet, "Working with Social Service and Legal Professionals," discusses the role of various professionals in the juvenile justice, court, mental health, and child welfare systems and presents tips for working with each of these professionals. The fourth pamphlet, "Assessing Child Safety in Foster Homes," outlines a method of assessing youth safety in four areas: (1) child; (2) affect; (3) relationships; and (4) environment. (KB)
