Results of College Admissions Testing in Texas for 1993-94 Graduating Seniors.
Texas Education Agency, Austin. Div. of Research and Evaluation.
This annual report presents Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) Program results for Texas for the 1993-94 graduating class. The last decade brought some recovery over the previous decade's decline in both Texas and national SAT averages, with relatively more improvement in Texas within the last 8 years. The average 1994 Texas SAT total of 886 was 16 points below the national average of 902. ACT Texas versus national score trends mirrored SAT trends over the same period. The 1994 Texas average ACT Composite score was 20.2 compared to a national average of 20.8. Although Texas SAT-tested students had less academic preparation than students nationally, percentages completing 20 or more credits improved from 23% in 1991 to 26% (versus 41% nationally) in 1995. Black and Hispanic students had fewer academic credits than White and Asian American students. The percentage of ethnic minority students scoring at or above the SAT or ACT criterion has improved since 1991, although the percentage of white students remains higher. As is consistent with previous findings, SAT total and ACT Composite scores tended to go up as the values of certain demographic variables, including district wealth, student family income, and district percentage of teachers with advanced degrees, rose. Generally, the SAT and ACT results suggest focusing on improving the academic preparation of all students, while also encouraging testing participation. An appendix contains detailed tables of mean SAT and ACT scores and a glossary of category descriptions used in the analyses. (Contains 4 tables, 2 figures, and 19 references.) (SLD)
