The Value-Able Child: Teaching Values at Home and School. Grades K-3.
Bostrom, Kathleen Long
Noting that parents and educators need to place greater emphasis on teaching children values, this book shows parents, teachers, and group leaders how to work as a team to teach the values young children need to lead happy, "value-able" lives. The book's introduction defines values and presents a rationale for teaching values to young children in school and home-school settings, at home, and in community groups. The book is comprised of 10 chapters that may be used in any order, each devoted to one value: cooperation, courage, friendship, honesty, kindness, loyalty, respect, self-control, sharing, and tolerance. Each chapter contains eight sections: (1) leaders' introduction, defining and explaining the value; (2) suggestions for reinforcing the value at home; (3) introductory script to share with children in preparation for studying the value; (4) fingerplay using the tune of a popular nursery rhyme; (5) read-aloud story based on each value, with discussion questions; (6) three activities to reinforce the value, including reproducible activity sheets; (7) suggestions for promoting the value within the community; and (8) a reading list for young children related to the value. Within each chapter, tips are provided for adapting group activities for home schooling. The book's appendix includes suggestions for group projects, student journals, and an award certificate. (KB)
