This training manual, designed for teaching parents of young children with autism, contains nine modules on behavior modification techniques. The modules address: (1) the ABC's of behavior, which discusses discriminating among words that describe feelings and words that describe behaviors, identifying examples of learned behavior, and defining and identifying examples of antecedents, behaviors, and consequences; (2) teaching the child to follow directions, which discusses reasons children do not follow directions, ways to make difficult directions easier for children to follow, what to do when a child follows a direction and what to do when a child does not; (3) an introduction to reinforcement, which describes kinds of reinforcement and the necessity of catching a child being good; (4) how to use reinforcement with the child; (5) planning activities to increase appropriate behavior, which describes planning activities that are enjoyable and appropriate, anticipating problems during activities, and establishing reinforcement plans; (6) responding to undesirable behaviors and deciding which strategy to use; (7) deciding what to teach the child and breaking the skill down into steps; (8) teaching the child new skills and the hierarchy of prompts; and (9) encouraging the child to communicate.
