A New Beginning: The Child Health Manual.
Peace Corps, Washington, DC. Information Collection and Exchange Div.
This manual was designed to be used as part of the pre-service training technical curriculum for Peace Corps health programs. The topics in the manual were selected from a needs assessment of Peace Corps personnel around the world. The manual consists of five parts and an introduction, the Trainer's Guide, which contains an overview of the manual and gives a brief synopsis of each section's content, notes on delivering the sessions, and guidelines on how to design a technical curriculum and an integrated training curriculum. Part One: Child Health--Country Overview provides country-specific information on health problems and activities in the host country. Part Two: Fundamentals of Child Health contains maternal and child health information, diseases, and immunizations. Part Three: Entering the Community contains exercises that help trainees understand the importance of working with the community while they perform health work. Part Four: Understanding the Setting leads trainees through the work of gathering general information about the community and its health issues. The last section, Part Five: Addressing Child Health Issues looks at how to design, implement, monitor, and evaluate health activities or interventions, and also trains participants in giving health presentations. Each section contains 3-12 lesson plans for sessions, each of which consists of objectives, overview, time needed, staff needed (if applicable), materials needed, preparation, delivery steps, and resources.
