The 1997 graduates of the Detroit Public Schools, Michigan, were asked to respond to a survey about their perceptions of the quality of their high school experience and to provide information about their employment status and postsecondary education. A total of 1,099 usable questionnaires was received from the graduates, a 17.6% response rate. Of these respondents, 95.2% indicated that they were or had been employed, enrolled, or in a military program after graduation. Only 18.4% described their current employment as full time, and the most commonly cited reason for not being employed full time was "going to school." The majority of respondents (81.4%) indicated that they were or had been enrolled in a college, university, special school, or training program. When grading the overall quality of their respective high schools, 81.6% of the graduates gave grades of "A" through "C." The special program in which graduates were most likely to have participated was the Detroit Compact,(38.4%) participated. The postsecondary program in state that was attended by the greatest number of graduates was Wayne State University. An appendix contains the graduate survey. (Contains 22 tables and 1 figure.) (SLD)
