This book is an effort to explore the ways in which mentoring and counseling are related and can be applied to one another. To meet the needs of a diverse audience, the authors present the advantages of initiating mentoring relationships with people of different genders, age groups, and cultural backgrounds. The book presents the rich history of mentoring, traditional mentoring models, specific strategies for establishing and maintaining successful mentoring relationships, and the benefits of mentoring relationships. An overview of the history of mentoring is presented in chapter 1, followed by a discussion of the traditional male model of mentoring in chapter 2. Chapter 3 focuses on issues in cross-gender mentoring because they tend to represent the second most frequently occurring mentoring relationships. This chapter is followed by a discussion of women and mentoring in chapter 4. Barriers to mentoring relationships for and by women are discussed as well as strategies for women to benefit from the use of mentoring. Chapter 5 follows with a discussion of multicultural perspectives related to mentoring and implications of mentoring for members of underrepresented groups. Programs and models of mentoring are presented in chapter 6, focusing on the differing formal models of mentoring and emphasizing their strengths and weaknesses. Strategies for mentoring are outlined in chapter 7, and chapter 8 discusses professional development and mentoring in the field of counseling. Chapter 9 addresses mentoring in educational settings, with a focus on school counseling and mentoring.
