Education and the American Indian: The Road to Self-Determination since 1928. Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged.
Szasz, Margaret Connell
First published in 1974, this book was the first full-length study of federal Indian education policy. This revised edition brings the material up to date with the addition of analysis and interpretation of trends and policies that shaped Indian education in the 1980s and 1990s. Chapters are arranged chronologically and cover specific eras such as the administration of education directors of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). Chapter titles are: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "Background: Federal Indian Education, 1870-1926"; (3) "W. Carson Ryan: From the Meriam Report to the Indian New Deal"; (4) "John Collier and Willard Walcott Beatty: New Deal Architects of Education"; (5) "New Deal Innovations: Progressive Education and Anthropology"; (6) "Theory Confronts Reality: Cross-Cultural Education"; (7) "Training Teachers for Cross-Cultural Education"; (8) "The Johnson-O'Malley Act: Indian Children and Public Schools, 1928-1945"; (9) World War II and the Postwar Years"; (10) "Hildegard Thompson: Education for an Urban, Technological Society"; (11) "New Directions in Federal Control"; (12) "Indian Organization and Leadership"; and (13) "Indian-Controlled Schools." Appendices include acronyms and abbreviations, colleges and other institutions of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, Executive Order 13096 (August 1998) concerning American Indian and Alaska Native education, BIA and U.S. Department of Education administrators, and BIA schools. (Contains references in notes, a lengthy bibliography, photographs, and an index.) (SV)
