Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language: A Teacher Self-Development and Methodology Guide.
Gebhard, Jerry G.
This book provides ways for English-as-a-Second/Foreign-Language (ESL/EFL) teachers to work on the development of their teaching beliefs and classroom practices through a process of self-assessment and exploration with new methods. This book seeks to help teachers become more effective in their efforts to teach their students to comprehend spoken English, to converse in English, to read for meaning, and to process writing. Each chapter begins with a set of questions related to the content of that chapter and ends with a set of self-development questions. The purpose of these questions is to encourage ESL/EFL teachers to become more effective by observing, talking about, and writing about their teaching. The book is divided into three parts and ten chapters. Part one, self-development and exploration, focuses on teacher self assessment and professional goal setting. Part two, principles of EFL/ESL teaching and learning, focuses on classroom management techniques, using various materials effectively, and the uses and importance of culture. Part three, teaching language skills, focuses on more effectively teaching individual student comprehension, conversation skills, reading, and writing. Two appendices offer descriptions of various professional EFL/ESL journals, and a list of publishers of EFL/ESL resources, respectively. (KFT)
