The Charter School movement combined with New Urbanist designers have uncovered the importance of scale in creating school environments that are more responsive to the needs of children. This paper examines the possibilities for mutual benefit for school and community by integrating school-building into the new urbanist tool kit. The discussion covers actual implementation: a prototype building, a means for integration into the community structure, and a financial analysis geared toward developers. Also explored are the benefits of small schools, charter school laws, and the synergism realized from the cooperation of charter school operators and new urbanist developers.
