What Should We Expect of Family Literacy? Experiences of Latino Children Whose Parents Participate in an Intergenerational Literacy Project. Literacy Studies Series.
Paratore, Jeanne R.; Melzi, Gigliana; Krol-Sinclair, Barbara
This book is a detailed account of the effects of parental involvement in a literacy project on Latino children's academic performance, addressing methods of parent participation, home literacy uses by children, and the nature of school experiences. The first two chapters provide family literacy and Intergenerational Literacy Project background information, and the next three chapters present children's case studies based on low, medium, and high school success rates. The final chapter is an analysis and interpretation of the results. Appendixes present sample conversation questions for teachers, parents, and children; a sample learner intake form and literacy log; and a list of working codes. Contains 56 references. (EF)
