Read It Aloud! Using Literature in the Secondary Content Classroom.
Richardson, Judy S.
This book shows middle school and high school classroom teachers how read-aloud excerpts from a variety of genres can be used in the content areas. The book aims to promote students' motivation to read and further study. It offers teaching ideas for special populations such as adult beginning readers and readers with disabilities. The book includes principles for selecting, locating, and using read-alouds. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction of the content area and its focus, after which three or four read-aloud and read-along selections are presented in detail, followed by some abbreviated selections. The eight chapters in the book are: (1) "Why Read Aloud?" (2) "Read-Alouds for Science"; (3) "Read-Alouds for Mathematics and Geography"; (4) "Read-Alouds for Social Studies"; (5) "Read-Alouds for English and Language Arts"; (6) "Read-Alouds for Music, Art, and Health/Physical Education"; (7) "Read-Alouds for Second Language Learners"; and (8) "Read-Alouds for Special Populations." Appendixes contain content area book lists, a list of journal columns on read-alouds, and a 31-item reference list. (NKA)
