A survey of graduate skills was conducted based on the responses of over 1,000 people who completed Higher National Diploma or first degree art, design, media, and related courses at The London Institute. It assessed what skills respondents acquired and developed during their course and compared these with the range of skills used in their post-graduation careers. Findings indicated the following: intrinsic interest, enjoyment in the subject, and personal and artistic development were the main influences on London Institute graduates' choice of course; respondents gave high ratings to the development of creative ideas and specific craft and technical skills; and they felt less competent in enterprise and business skills and found career preparation activities inadequate. Findings on postgraduation employment circumstances showed that art and design graduates' early experiences were characterized by job insecurity, unemployment, frequent job changes, and a range of paid and unpaid activities, within and outside the arts. Findings confirmed the high level of need among new art and design graduates for a range of career management and enterprise skills, and relatively large gaps emerged in relation to negotiating, networking, and self promotion. Respondents emphasized that more and better integrated career advice and guidance activities should become an integral part of the course curriculum.
