A national survey obtained information from students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) during 1998 at a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institute in Australia. Data came from graduates (students who completed their course and graduated with a qualification from a course) and module completers (students who successfully completed part, but not all, of the training necessary to complete a full qualification). Findings indicated the following: 87.7 percent of TAFE graduates were employed or in further study after their course; 72.8 percent of TAFE graduates were employed after their training; 67.5 percent of TAFE module completers were employed after their training; 61.8 percent of graduates and 61.7 percent of module completers rated the overall quality of their TAFE training as 8 or more on a 10-point scale ranging from "poor" to "excellent"; 47.4 percent of TAFE graduates and 40 percent of TAFE module completers who were unemployed before their training found work after their training; and 23.2 of employed TAFE graduates and 10.6 percent of employed TAFE module completers moved to a higher skilled occupation after their training. Other findings were as follows: graduates were more likely to undertake their training for vocational or job-related reasons than module completers; module completers indicated "employment/gained what I wanted from training" was the main reason for not continuing TAFE training; and "personal reasons" was the next most important largest reason.
