Ertha S. Patrick
The Title VI programs of the Austin Independent School District (AISD), Texas, are described. Title VI provides federal funds to states under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended in 1994. Title VI is intended to contribute to the improvement of elementary and secondary educational programs in both public and private nonprofit schools and institutions. States earn Title VI funds based on their school-aged population. The AISD's 1998-99 allocation of $457,395 was supplemented by funds rolled over from the prior year. The following programs were funded under Title VI in the AISD: (1) a coordinator of volunteers; (2) library resources; (3) a mathematics specialist; (4) private school library resources; (5) science and health education; (6) visiting teachers; (7) Reading Recovery programs; and (8) School Support Community Specialists.
