Doing Good Because Good Is Good To Do: Facilitating Character Development.
Richardson, Rita C.; Norman, Katherine I.
This paper describes intrapersonal and interpersonal attributes needed for emotional growth and character development, stressing the importance of teaching children personal discipline and doing "good because good is good to do" rather than the use of behavioral interventions. In the area of intrapersonal competence, the paper proposes that self-discovery, self-management, delayed gratification, courage, and honesty are essential for attaining personal maturity. Empathy, altruism, problem solving, tolerance, and social deftness are described as indispensable for attaining positive interpersonal competence. The paper also proposes strategies and activities for parents and teachers to assist children in their emotional growth. (Contains 20 references.) (KB)
