The Families Matter series of papers from the Harvard Family Research Project advances the concept of family-centered child care, advocating an approach to early childhood education that addresses the development of the child and family together. Grounded in family support principles, which build on family strengths and work from a community's culture and resources, family-centered child care incorporates positive attitudes about working with parents and practical activities to serve the family. Asserting that a key place to promote widespread use of family support principles and practices is through the child care training system, the papers that make up the series focus on how the child care field trains providers to include family support. This report in the series examines training at 2-year colleges (primarily community colleges) to determine the extent to which training for early childhood professionals incorporates a family focus. Two-year colleges train much of the early childhood workforce, including child care providers, family day care providers, early childhood educators, and family support program personnel. This report outlines findings from a national survey and structured key informant interviews on the early childhood training content and practices at over 350 two-year colleges throughout the nation. The report also offers tools for assessing and strategies for furthering family-focused training at 2-year colleges. The strategies offer colleges a range of options, from minor curriculum changes to larger-scale changes in program structure, for better preparing the early childhood workforce to work with and support families.
